Recovery and follow-up after returning to the US

Continuity of care belongs in the decision, not at the end of the trip.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Before treatment, agree on postoperative visits in Korea, the criteria for flying home, and the arrangements for in-person care in the US. Obtain records that identify the operation, any implanted lens, medications, and the follow-up plan. Recovery varies by procedure and by patient.

Before you leave the clinic

Request clear instructions for eye drops, hygiene, activities, driving, and scheduled examinations. Ask how to reach the clinical team outside normal hours and what symptoms should prompt immediate assessment.

Before your return flight

Complete the required visits and ask the surgeon to confirm whether you are fit to travel. If retinal surgery involves an intraocular gas bubble, flying may be dangerous until the bubble has fully resolved and the surgeon clears you. Never apply laser-surgery travel advice to a different operation.

After returning home

Have a local clinician and a route for sharing your records. Keep appointments even if vision feels good. Ask the Korean clinic and your US provider how they will communicate if a new examination finding requires a change to the plan.

When not to wait

Sudden vision loss, severe or increasing eye pain, a curtain over your vision, or new flashes with many floaters needs urgent local medical assessment. Do not wait for a reply from an overseas clinic or for a planned flight.

Common questions

Can online follow-up replace an examination?

No. A message or video call can support communication, but eye pressure, corneal healing, or retinal concerns may require in-person testing.

Which records should I request?

Ask for your diagnosis, operation report, device or lens details, pre- and postoperative measurements when available, prescriptions, and follow-up instructions.

What if a problem develops in the US?

Seek appropriate local care promptly. Share your records and notify the treating clinic; do not delay an urgent examination while waiting for overseas advice.
